![]() ![]() ![]() The new title, simply God of War 1, opens to show us an older, more grizzled Kratos than we're used to seeing. As for why he traveled to the Nordic lands, as opposed to Egypt or Arabia (which also have interesting pantheons) might have something to do with this cultural zeitgeist that has propelled Norse Mythology to its current popularity. Why the sudden boom? I'm not sure I can put my finger on it precisely, but its brutal and strange mythos seems to resonate now more than ever.īut why move for the God of War series to an entirely different mythology in the first place? As it turns out, Kratos essentially destroyed the entire Greek Pantheon by the end of God of War III, so he needed to move on if there were to be any more sequels. On television, there's Vikings, and in movies, there's Marvel's Thor. Games like Odin Sphere, Too Human, The Banner Saga, and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice come to mind. ![]() Strangely enough, a lot of media has found purchase in that world, especially in the last ten or so years. Three console entries and a couple of handheld releases later, the God of War franchise has moved away from Greek Mythology and on to Norse. ![]()
